groundcover for boulevard medians

| I am looking for groundcover options for some medians in a boulevard in my community. Currently turfgrasses are planted there, and we are interested in something that will require less maintenance and will be more weed-resistant. The medians (there are 6 of them) are edged with concrete curbs and are approximately 300 ft long by 20 feet across. Some are in full sun and some are partly shaded by nearby trees. Whatever is planted there needs to look relatively tidy, and should not require much in the way of watering or fertilizing once established. Because of the concrete around these medians, something that might otherwise be considered aggressive should not be a problem, and may in fact be desirable. (Cost is also a consideration, so we will not be able to plant as densely as would be ideal - probably 24" or greater spacing.) I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions! If this is successful, it will prevent the city from spraying pesticides in front of an elementary school. |

Periwinkle. Find a woodlot...on a farm nearby...go under the trees and dig to your heart's content. I almost paid 24 dollars a flat for this when my farmer friend laughed and said it's for the taking. After it takes, prune with scissors twice a year. Nice flowers too. Heat resistant, low maintenance. |
