I just got a boat load of perenial seeds, I started them in seed starter kit. They all germinated, but then 3/4 of them died. they just fell over and whithered. I left the top on the tray. Should I have taked it off and if so for my next try when exactly should I remove it? I'm itchy to try again. I spent 84 dollars on seeds and would hate to think I will kill all the poor seedlings. I have a beautifully ammended bed just waiting for them. Please help and tell me how to be successful at this bright idea I had to save money.
Thank you
Jolene

i don't have the answer -- BUT -- you have a much better chance of getting an answer if you post on the perennial forum or the seed starting forum. good luck $84 in seeds, wow.

This sounds like damping off.
It might be a bit late in the season to be starting new perennial seeds.
May I suggest Winter Sowing.? And read everything you can lay your hands on about starting perennials from seed. Some seeds require darkness, some require a cold period, scarification, some must be planted fresh. There is a lot to learn. BUT, that keeps us going all thru the long Winter.

RE: help please

Mother Nature gave us great gardening soil for gardens, but garden soil is NOT meant for container growing, particularly indoors. Get yourself a good seeding mixture, put it in a container meant for the microwave, dampen it, put it in the microwave and "cook" until the temperature comes up to 185 degrees. Check temperature with a meat thermometer OUTSIDE of the micwave--NEVER PUT A THERMOMETER IN THE MICROWAVE! I do about 3 quarts at a time, and it takes about 6 minutes. I also make my own growing mix. If you want to know more, send me an email. Good Luck !
corgicorner6@msn.com PLEASE, if you wish to communicate with me put ONLY the word "GardenWebber" in the subject area--doing so will keep your email from going into the junk pile. THANK YOU !
