Can seeds gathered from pampas grass growing alone country roads be used for propogation? Is there a better time of the year than another and should they be frozen before planting?

The reed grass which grows abundantly beside the roads in Ontario are VERY AGRESSIVE plants. They are NOT pampas grass at all. The leaves differ; the flowers differ; it is not something you want to have.

I know that I was tempted at first, but very glad I resisted the temptation. A friend of mine did not resist a similar temptation, and he ended up selling his house just to get away from it.

I encourage you to think twice.

However, on another note, there are occasionally some less agressive grasses out there. One is the malepartus variety in the miscanthus sinensis family. I did find it along a road side and it has been good.....smaller but fairly well behaved.

Thanks for the advice jroot. Sounds dangerous. The difficulty I'm having is a ditch in front of the house. It's about 2' deep x 100' long and constantly filled with various weeds. Impossible to cut due to it's sharp drop. Behind this ditch is a 25' high cedar fence, then my lawn. I had thought that the reeds would take over due to their agressivity and be backdropped by the dark cedars for those using this road. Could be attractive with no maintenance?
