direct sowing perennial hollyhock

I have a couple of perennial hollyhocks blooming right now. Any tips on helping them to self-seed? I also have a packet of seeds. I grew them from seed originally but I forget whether it was early or late fall that I direct sowed them and how deep.

Tips? If you allowed them to go to seed, have a shovel ready come spring. They have become weeds for me--and boy do they have roots!

I just sprinkle seed in a desired spot and weed away all but 3 or 4 sprouts the following spring. Some will set blossoms, some won't, and the color is always a gamble, since-as with columbines- the cross pollination will give me surprise colors each year. You MUST weed the sprouts, or, like elvis says, you will need a shovel to dig up big tap roots.
