Franlkinia or Stewartia trees

Hello,

I am in north central Indiana and looking for a summer (July-August) flowering tree to put near my metal gazebo. Ideally it would grow tall enough to arch enough for my 6'3" husband to walk under it & give some shade to the table inside the gazebo. I have read online that Franklinia & Stewartia trees both bloom in the summer. But I have never seen one and none of my local nurseries stock it. Does anyone know if either of these will work in Zone 5b. Ideas on where to get one? Other suggestions for summer flowering trees appreciated too. Thank you!

RE: Franlkinia or Stewartia trees

Both Franklinia and Stewartia are zone 6, and prefer moist, acidic soil, with some protection (understory trees), so they probably would not work in the location you describe. July-August is a tough time for large flowering plants in the midwest -- less rainfall and heat--consequently there are few large specimens flowering. You could use a combination of late summer-fall vines, like clematis, either on the gazebo or climbing up into another tree. Prairie Fire crabapple is a fast growing specimen that has gorgeous pink blossoms in spring followed by red fruits that persist well into the winter. It can be pruned while young to the branch clearance you want. There are lots of nice small trees -- just not summer flowering. Hope this helps.
