Winterize with leaves

I am growing crape myrtles here in zone 5. Each winter I cover them with fallen leaves held inside a 3 ft tall chicken wire cage. This year I have one that is about 5ft tall and 6 feet wide. Is it necessary to completely cover with leaves like I have been? Can I just put a couple feet over the roots? I would just die if they did not survive the winter!
