 o
recipe for asparagus bed prep?

I want to plant a new asparagus bed and would like any info from others who have done so along the gulf coast, zone 8. My soil is acidic and mostly red clay and sand. I have some organic compost and also quite a bit of fireplace ash. Do I need lime, spagnum peat moss..eggs, yeast and flour? (smile) I did ask for a recipe...TIA

RE: recipe for asparagus bed prep?

I think the really important soil prep is lots of organic matter. Mostly I think sphagnum is not recommended as a soil amendment. I have an asparagus 'bed' that the birds planted I guess--I only know I didn't!--and it does pretty well in spite of no previous prep. Most important I think is to be sure to get vaarieties recommended for warm areas like ours. Many won't do that well down here.
