Amending soil

I'm having a landscaper put in some small trees and shrubs next week. I asked about using soil amendments in the sandy soil (I'm new to FL, and used to heavy clay soils, so this is new to me!). He said he usually doesn't add soil amendments at the time of planting, but said he sometimes adds water-holding granules. What is your experience/advice on adding organic soil amendments during planting? My gut feeling is that we should add some compost or Soil Helper (ground bark) when the plants go in.
