Mother Nature Confused in Houston

It's 55 degrees in Houston (26 miles from the coast where I live). Tonights low is in the forties and Saturday night's low is 35 degrees! What gives?!? I am not used to late fronts like this. A late front to me is early March. Most of my herbs are pretty hardy, except for basil. I was going to move my now-in-fruit Mexican lime, my tomatoes, bell peppers, and jalepenos right up next to the house. All are in containers and my patio has a corner between two walls of the house that is protected from wind and such. Will this be enough or do I need to bring everything inside? Incidentally, the next night is supposed to be back into the fifties. I also have a summer squash in a container too big to move. Can I make some sort of make shift cloche and cover it? I think there is too much soil for it to even get that cold.
