what to plant next to the ocean?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but I was hoping that someone might have suggestions of what flowers that would tolerate salt spray? My parents work for a family in the Bahamas and are basically "property managers" for them. The family will be having a wedding on the property later this year and they want it to be more landscaped than it is. My mom called me kind of in a panic, because everything they seem to be planting just can't take the salt spray. I've looked on line and gotten a few suggestions, but I'm looking to see if anyone on GW has some too? If you have any suggestions, please e-mail them to me. Thank you for any help you might give me.

Hibiscus, bulbine, palms (they should bloom there), canna, oleander, hymenocallis(spider lily), crinums, petunias are all planted here along various properties on the Seawall and do just fine. If I think there is a list on the Texas A & M Website.

My wife had luck with hydrangas and azaleas on her families former beach property. They were planted fifty feet from the seawall, and with about a 30 foot elevation, some of the highest land on the Mississippi coast.

This home was on Ocean Springs beach which is brackish, and with small waves, (unless a storm came a shore) so this info might not apply to your situation.

Send a email address and I will scan a copy of belt 1 and 2 plants for growing on the seashore. Exposure to salt spray. There is not a whole lot that can take direct exposure.

Some of my favorites on the list are belt 1- Lantana, cape honey suckle, russian olive, rosemary they can be washed by sea water occasionaly

belt 2- Asiatic Jasmine, regular honeysuckle (lonicera japonica) Day lilly,Zinnia, rose mallow( hybiscus, geranium, moss rose, Oleander, Vibrum, and your palms. These tolerate salt spray but usually will not live if washed with sea water like in a storm.

Might also be a good idea to see what others are growing that way you can easily find a source. A good nursery should have all the items needed. They will need the 5 gallon type if they are going to make an impression on a wedding this year. Use some superthrive to get them started fast.

I have had great results with Rugosa roses as well as the other plants listed here.

And the rugosa's offer the sweetest fragrence as well.
