Heirloom Tomato Suggestions

Posted by lonestarplanter 9a, TX (My Page) on

Does anyone have any suggestions for Heirloom tomatoes? I am about 30 miles from the coast in Brazoria county Texas. I am planning on saving seeds from year to year. I prefer a slicing/eating tomato under 1 pound. I have tried a few different varieties over the past 5 years with varied results. I want a flavorful tomato with a resistance to splitting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I haven't grown a lot of them but Royal Hillbilly, Indian Stripe and Stump of the World are all doing well for me this year. Royal Hillbilly is the best producer but they're all great ones.

Have you tried Eva Purple Ball or Florida Pink? Those are two true-breeding tomato varieties that have done very well for me in my Gulf Coast garden. Most varities I grow (both hybrid and true-breeding) struggle with the heat, high humidity and foliage diseases, but these two varieties do very well here. Eva Purple Ball makes tennis ball size fruit, while Florida Pink makes huge +1 lb beefsteaks. Florida Pink is incredibly productive for such a large variety. Both varieties are crack resistant. If you grow them, be sure to give them a tall cage (8 ft or taller) with strong support, because they both make huge plants with very heavy foliage.

I have had good luck with Atkinson. I copied this from my seed packet. Atkinson: Introduced 1966 for southern, hot and humid areas by Auburn University. Produce indeterminate, regular-leaf, vigorous plants with good yields of 8 oz. to 1 lb., red, globe-shaped tomatoes that are very meaty with good, old-fashioned tomato flavors. Tomatoes are meaty. This is an outstanding tomato for sandwiches, salads and canning. Great for growing in Southeastern U.S. and tropical regions. Disease Resistant.

Hi, just visiting.

You have probably already found this site but it has some good info concerning cracks and offers a list of crack resistant tomatoes, the open pollinated ones are good for seed saving too.

Here is a link that might be useful: Harvest to Table: Crack-Resistant Tomato Varieties

I just ate heirloom tomatoes for the first time and I'm totally in love with them. Does anyone know where I can buy seeds that will do well along the Gulf Coast, and is it too late to plant now? I'm new, so please forgive my ignorance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ginia

I also recommend Evas Purple Ball and Florida Pink. Great disease resistance and flavor. I've also had good luck with Costulato. I've heard raves about Arkansas Traveler.

For cherry tomatoes try Dr Caroline or Mat's Wild cherry.

If you go to the Growing tomatoes forum, there will be many suggestions for where to buy seeds. I haven't bought in years. I just save seeds for the next year. You need to prepare the seeds for saving, and the process is posted on the forum.
