Reccommendations for Shade Planting

Posted by jdreidinger 8b Gulf Coast FL (My Page) on

I have an area between my house and the one next door that has lots of trees but is pretty bare down near the ground now that I have cleaned out all the weed vines that were taking over. I want to plant some large shrubs to cut down on the view between the houses. It gets some filtered sun but not alot. The soil is rich and it gets water regularly from the irrigation system.

I want to put some hydrangeas back there but want to put some other large shrubs/perennials too. Any ideas? I've never had much shade before.

Thanks

I can't help you on the shrubs. But when you mention shade, I think Hostas and Impatiens.

There are numerous types of Hostas varying in size. And the Impatiens would give you some color.

I presently have one area that I used wood ferns and sword tail ferns for the floor around my trees. Still this won't help you on cutting down the view from neighbors.

I have similar areas in the future that I plan to clear of underbrush and sticky vines, but it will be in shade so I will look forward to other comments.

I would plant plumbago, brugmansia, rose of sharon, and cannas. They all do well in my shade. If under brush grew then these should also. All are very hardy and quick growers.

Ferns are generally happy in the shade as well. They won't do much to screen the view of the next house, but they're pretty. :)

Many homes in my area use lots of bouganvilla and ixora shrubs. They do well and are easy to tend.

I have lots of shade and for screening I use arbricola. Not sure if they are cold hardy in your zone. Otherwise, camelias, rhododendrons and azaleas all love shade and all have gorogeous blooms. They are acid loving plants so a soil test may be needed.
