Mystery solved

My plants were being topped -- even seedlings. Someone suggested cutworms when I mentioned the seedlings being topped. But this wasn't the work of cutworms; it was too high on the stems.

Plants were turned over. Plants were uprooted.

I blamed my son's dog. I thought my daughter was letting her run through the plants. (The dog is always very careful when I am around -- she takes a wide turn around my beds and pots.)

I was working with the seedlings one morning -- potting up, etc. I took a break to sit and look over the situation. Imagine my surprise when a PYGMY GOAT walks up. After grabbing a ROS and being chased, the goat decided to leave the plants alone while I was outside. He then decided that licking my knees would suffice.

Very beautiful, if destructive, goat. If he would leave the plants alone, I wouldn't mind him visiting.

I like the flavour of goat. Very similar to lamb.
