Growing Plumeria in North Texas

Posted by barbarablack North Texas (My Page) on

My sister just returned from Hawaii and brought me 2 Plumeria clippings (waxed and in plastic) sold all over Hawaii.
I can read the directions, but my question is...Is is too late to plant them now? We have a few more months of warm weather...thinking of putting them in pots so I can secure them for the colder months....Please help!

If you are going to pot them go ahead. They just don't like any weather below 50

I am in zone 8b and have four growing in the ground - they do fine - we got down to 28 degrees a few times last year and they had no problems with the temp. - in the winter, we get back up into the 50-60's during the day. They are planted between the greenhouse and the house, with a southwest exposure. Others that are smaller are grown in pots and kept on the south side of the greenhouse. When they out-grow their gallon pots, in the ground they go, to fend for themselves.

I have seen them in the ground around our area so it looks like I need to try putting them into the ground as they don't seem to do as well. They come back when they lose their leaves but haven't tried to leave them outside through the winter here. Thanks

They'll freeze even as far south as Houston. I'd put them in pots, they are especially prone to freezing when young. Keep 'em dry after you plant them, don't water until you see new growth. Good luck.
Tally HO!
