Sure you can use them for dry food storage - any dry food including flour, dehydrated foods, pasts, sugar, cereal, rice, etc. Many do.

You can also use them for fermenting, making kraut, pickles, and other fermented vegetables. Great for making kraut especially.

I could think of all kinds of ways to use those around my house. Not just the obvious, like food storage. They are also great for storing all kinds of little odds and ends you want to organize and keep dry, or secure away from vermin -- seed packets, nails and screws, sewing thread, that sort of thing.

I just got 5 of them from or Rec Center, they sell pickles and they've been very popular lately.

I like the extra wide mouth, so they work well for storing things you want to reach in and grab one of. I'll use them for pickled eggs, not sure what else but I'm sure I'll come up with something.

Glass or plastic?

I buy a lot of foods in bulk (flour, sugar, beans, etc.) and would find these extraordinarily useful!
If they are glass, those sell (used) around here for up to $6.00 each! Glass ones are hard to find anymore.
Even the plastic ones are sold for $1.

Nice find!

$3.98 per gallon jar here... including the pickles.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pickles at Sam's

How about a terrarium garden?

I let my chicken stock chill in gal. jars, then I can remove the fat and can it.

I just made a large batch of Choc.Chip cookies for valentines, and I stored them in my gallon jar until doled out to friends.

Love my gallon jars...
