I had a nice onion crop this year. After I picked them, they dried in the sun a few days then I put them in a mesh bag in my pantry. They started to sprout so I put them in a paper bag and they have been down in a dark cool room in the basement since fall. I sent my son down to get some for dinner today and we discovered they were growing--a LOT! What did I do wrong and what do I do with them now???

What variety were they. Only certain varieties will store for any length of time. The so-called "sweet" and/or "mild" varieties do not store for any length of time. Plus were they fully dormant when harvested, leaves flopped over and the necks brown and fully dried? If not they need to be for best results. Standard recommendation for curing time for storage onions in a warm dry place out of the direct sun and with good air circulation is 3-4 weeks rather than a few days. If you prefer to grow the mild sweets then next year consider coarse chopping and dehydrating them for long term use. Hope this helps. Dave

Oh, I did not know any of that! Thanks for the information! I will research what varieties are good for storage next time around.

In Mich. you would have to grow long-day varieties so look into Copra, Big Daddy, or Sterling. I have to grow short-day varieties down here so haven't tried any of them but all 3 are rated as long storage varieties at 5-6 month storage. Dave
