Trying to get some meat to rot with no luck!

I've been trying to get some meat to get stinky to use at fly bait for my paw paw trees. They are supposed to be pollinated by flies.

I put some raw beef trimmings and some turkey cold cuts that needed to be tossed in an open bag on the counter. It has been a week and it still smells edible, weird!

Makes me kinda wonder what they are putting in our food!

Maybe too dry? Try moistening them regularly with some non-chlorinated water. Add a squirt of compost tea maybe? LOL.

I added some well water Sunday, after your suggestion Slimy Okra.

Guess what I have today, slimy meat! ;)

It still smells OK though!

I guess I need to pick up some road kill.

Find some roadkill, that works the best. Doesn't have to be meat, any rotten will draw the flies.

I picked up a squirrel and a rabbit both covered in flies yesterday evening. Almost lost my lunch even though I used a shovel.

I put them and the other meat near the paw paws and guess what I have today!

The meat that I tried to rot is still there and a buzzard, I think, ate the rabbit and squirrel!

I'm going road kill hunting again in a little while, I'm putting whatever I get in a burlap bag and hanging it from the middle tree.

If your pawpaws are fly pollinated, will they not attract sufficient pollinators by themselves?

Matthias, pawpaws are only pollinated by carrion flies, because the regular pollinators will fly UP into the blooms. That's why he needs the rotting flesh.

After the carrion flies are there, they will stay there for awhile. Here, it's too early to worry about any blooms, barely above freezing, so we're not having any blooms. My pawpas are in the woods, totally surrounding by woods. They don't like being 'out in the open', or mine don't. We've tried to transplant or even plant the seeds, but don't seem to work unless they are totally surrounded by LOTS of trees.

myfamilysfarm, mine don't like open areas either. I have a 15 year old tree, the last survivor of 4 in an open area. It is only 3 or 4 foot tall and has bloomed for the first time this year.

My 5 year old trees are at least 12' tall and have bloomed every year.

I think something pollinated them before I put out the meat, I have little fruits! Even on the old tree!

Maybe I will get lucky this year!

Those are very short trees. It doesn't take much to draw the flies. Our trees are probably 20' tall or more.
