| I have a couple of old Ball jars that have the metal bail with the rubber gasket. I am finding it very difficult to open the jars. Is there some trick to this? It seems as though I'm going to damage the ridge on top of the glass lid before the metal bail is pulled down into the open position.
I am not using these jars for canning. I just like the look of them and use them for storing dry goods. |

| I would try using a plastic blade to get some leverage. If that doesn't work you could try immersing the jars in warm water which would soften the gaskets. Nothing too extreme, though, due to the age of the glass. Eventually they will loosen. Over time those rubber gaskets do deteriorate, especially in warm conditions, so it's almost like the two layers of glass are glued together. You'll probably want to replace with new ones once you get the jars open. Carol |
