Black spot on lid

Hello All :)

I just opened a jar of tomato puree that I canned Sept 2012. I was surprised to see a tiny black spot on the underside of the lid. It didn't spurt, the lid was sealed well. When I wiped the spot off with a paper towel it slid off easily.

Hummmmm Wonder if it's okay?

TIA for replies,
Judy

I should also add that I opened two other jars tonight. One was fine and the other spurted so I flushed it down the toilet. Very unusual! I've been canning for over 30 years and I have never had a jar spurt. Anyway, back to the jar with the black spot underside the lid . . . any opinions?

Mold most likely. It happens. Plus some acidic foods can interact with some of the lids lining. Just depends on your comfort level.

Personally I never worry about it since I know my tomato products are properly acidified and processed. A small spot of mold isn't anything dangerous safety wise. Any way you will be cooking it more.

Dave,

That's exactly what I hoped YOU would say :)

I really didn't want to throw two jars away in one night! I think I've had to throw a total now of 3 jars away in my whole life so two in one night woulda killed me lol.

Thanks for replying
