It's a mulberry. The size, color, and taste depend on the individual tree. With wild mulberries there is an extreme amount of natural variation.

The 4 different berries above are from 4 different wild trees and all of them all ripe. This photo was taken last year (they are almost getting ripe here now).

How do I know if they're ripe? do they fall from the tree easily or just taste ripe?

The berries will come away from the tree very easily when ripe. A time saving way to harvest them is to put a tarp or old sheet (old being the key word; the berries stain) on the ground under the tree and give the tree/branches a shake. The ripe berries will fall off onto the tarp/sheet.
