| I am thinking of getting a pressure canner so I can make my own spaghetti sauce and can other low acid veggies. I know everyone recommends the weighted type canners but I found this Presto 23 quart dial type at Target for $79.59. Is this a good buy for that type? Also is it just that the dial type become uncalibrated that makes them worse than the weighted one? Is it possible to convert the dial type to the weighted type and if so would it be worth it at this price?
TIA

| I also found this Mirro 16 quart it looks like it is a weighted type or it says 5,10 & 15# plugs (whatever that means) on Ebay. |

| The Mirro is ok, some parts issues with new ones since the company was sold. But if it is big enough for your needs, fine. The preferred one is the Presto 23 qt. (and that is a good price) since it allows stacking and can also be used as a BWB. We here usually recommend buying the separate 3 piece weight set for it (Part 50332) for an additional $12. That is how you convert the Presto to a weighted canner. Use the 3 piece weights and ignore the gauge. Also is it just that the dial type become uncalibrated that makes them worse than the weighted one? Even new gauges have tested off by as much as 4 lbs. and they require annual testing. That's why we recommend the weights add-on. A third alternative if 16 qt is big enough for your needs is the Presto 16 qt. model which comes with no gauge but has the 3 piece weights. It looks like the Mirro you linked but doesn't have the quality control issues and is $69 approx. at Walmart. So with the shipping on the ebay one you'd save a few $$ if you can get one at local Walmart. Dave |
