Want to start canning, where to start

I want to start canning, how do I start? I got jars and lids but that's about it. I have a big sauce pot for water bath, do I really need a tray for the bottom? I want to start with pickled red beets, I'm going to harvest my Detroit red beets this weekend. There are a ton of recipe online but I don't know who to trust. Is going out and buying the Ball Blue Book my best bet for getting recipes? Any advice for a newbie is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
