Pressure canning 1st time question!

Have a shiny new PReso 23 quart pressure canner, with pressure dial gauge. Today I am attempting canning green beans. I followed the instructions and after the jars were in the warm water, waited to watch for steam coming out of the vent pipe for about 10 mins then put the pressure regulator on it. COntinued to boil on high on my gas stove.
about 5 minutes later the air vent/cover lock popped up providing visual evidence of pressure.

However after more than 20 minutes of boiling, the dial gauge did not budge from 0. The canner was almost whistling because it was over high heat. I am nervous that something will go wrong and wonder if I should turn the heat off and inspect the dial gauge. Does it often take more than 20 minutes for the dial gauge to show pressure? I am concerned since it has not moved off 0.

No, something is wrong turn it off. Then we can talk more about the proper steps to using a pressure canner. Several test runs need to be done well before trying to can any foods.

My first thought is the lid was not properly seated and my second is a problem with the gasket.

However, Dave is right about running through the operation step-by-step to troubleshoot. This is why it's such a good idea to do a test run with water.

I went to ask advice from two Amish neighbours who so lots of canning. It was indeed the rubber gasket which had been inserted upside down :)
I just finished the beans and everything went like clockwork. Thanks all!

I still suggest you read through the step by step guide linked above as it sounds as if you are leaving out a couple of crucial steps. You'll also want to invest in the 3 piece weight set rather than rely on the gauge unless you plan to have the gauge tested every year. Lots of info here about that.

Yep followed the guide and it worked well. I am less nervous and excited to learn more!
