Does anyone have a good way to keep track of what you have canned?

I have tried a couple of methods that are not working so well. I want to (eventually)know how many jars of whatever we use during the year. The kids take stuff off the shelves and "forget" to write it down.

Some stuff like soup, beans, chili etc I make up when I have time and we are running low. These I would like to keep track of but it is not crucial. Annies salsa will be a different story.

any suggestions that have worked for you over an extended time would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Lynn

Well, the only thing I have come up with over the last 6 years is I make a list at spring cleaning time, count what's on hand and add what I can and put in the pantry. I count again a year later, do the math and figure out how much we used. If we run out, then I make a note to make more next year. I'm actually happier when we run out of stuff :-)

We tried spreadsheets, erasable boards, you name it. Nothing really worked, so now I just keep a list on the fridge of what we have (salsa, dill pickles, sweet pickles, blueberry jam, etc.) but don't worry about keeping a running inventory.
