Canning jars sucked in when pressure canning...

| I was canning crowder peas, and when I opened the canner two of the glass jars had been sucked in. The lids appear to be fine. Any ideas on what caused this, and will my jars eventually explode? Thanks! |

| The jars "had been sucked in" to what? Laid over into the water? Do you mean the jars actually changed shape? I don't think it is possible - glass just isn't that flexible. It would shatter. Lids can warp and buckle sure, but not jars. Are you possibly talking about siphoning? Meaning liquid was sucked out of the jar? Sorry but I just can't picture what you mean with that little info. | The jars actually changed shape. I didn't think it was possible, either, but apparently it is. The side of the jars indented in, from about a quarter of the way from the top of the big part of the jar (below the lip) to about a quarter of the way up from the bottom. I'll try to take a pic in a bit, but I'm not sure how it'll turn out. I've got them sitting outside in case they explode, and it's dark. |

| Wow! That is a first for me. Is that a regular Ball canning jar? It looks like a mayo jar. Any chance it is one of the Walmart Mainstays brand? I have heard about them being thinner, more light weight so maybe they can't cope with pressure canning. How many lbs. pressure were you using? Like you I'm not sure I'd want that jar inside. Keep us posted on what happens, ok? Dave |

| Nope, it's a Kerr. It was around 12.5 pounds of pressure. I guess I'll call them tomorrow and see what they say. I've got kidney beans in now, so I'm interested to see if any of them do that. I'm very, very new to canning, but the only things I can think of are either it was bad glass, or somehow such a vacuum was created that it sucked the jar in. If that was the case, though, I'd think the jars would have exploded. |

| I'm blown away by that. I wonder if you could email the picture to Kerr....how the heck did that happen without breaking the jar? Anybody? LindaLou? When I read your subject I thought you meant the lids had sucked down to the point of a wrinkle or buckle, that I've seen :) |

| Baffling to say the least! If you take any more pictures, I'd suggest having someone hold a straight edge (ruler) along side the jar. I'm looking forward to hearing what Kerr has to say. |

| Well, the representative from Kerr said it must have been deformed when I took it out of the box. I didn't even think about that. Now I know to look over the entire jar before using it, not just around the top. Thanks for your input, everyone! |

| I've seen deformed ones before right out of the box, but never after canning. I doubt if it would cause problems, but I would use that one first, then save it for pennies or stuff. |

| That is odd ! I am sure they must have been deformed from the box. So much for quality control ! They should send you a coupon for a free box of jars. That is just wrong. |

| Over my many years of canning, I had never seen a Ball or Kerr like that. I have seen the Golden Harvest with problems similar. goes to show that the quality of new stuff isn't as good as it used to be 30-40 years ago. |

| I don't know that the quality of the new stuff isn't as good. I have seen and used a lot of 50-60-70 year-old jars and they have their share of manufacturing flaws. I admit this is a new one. I'm sure you've figured out the issue with shell beans and peas re swelling and water absorption. We've had several previous threads on the tricky issue of canning these starchy products and the liquid to solids ratio. My husband suggested, just to be on the safe side, to place these jars in a bucket before opening, so that if there is any shattering, the glass won't fly anywhere. Carol |

| I had a jar of purple hull peas do that to me! I'm not sure of the brand though. It was only one jar. I threw it out. |
