Harsch crock, would you return this due to damage?

My mother splurged and bought me a 10 liter Harsch crock for my birthday. It arrived yesterday, and it was slightly damaged. I've never seen one before, so I don't know if it's common, but since she spent $150 on it, I would think it would be perfect, for that price! Am I being picky? Should I return it and request a new one? I was very excited to make sauerkraut tonight, and don't really want to wait for a new one. It has a ding on the lid that is purely cosmetic, but it also has a chip on the underside of the lid. I'm not sure if this would affect sealing. I'd appreciate others opinions on keeping it or returning it. Here are some pics of the damage. Thanks!

Is the crock OK? I'm sure if you sent those pix to store or manufacturer, they'd replace just the lid for you, so you don't have to ship it back (or take it back to the store).

Yes, it's just the lid. That's a great idea, I will send those pictures. It was purchased on amazon.

While neither will affect its ability to work just fine I'd seek a new lid just on principle. Brand new out of the box shouldn't be damaged at all. Dave

Thanks for the advice! I called amazon today and wow were they so nice and helpful! The woman credited my account for the price of the lid, and then I went ahead and purchased the replacement lid with the credit. I can't say enough about that customer service! Its always nice to have seemless customer service, and so rarely happens these days. The lid with shipping cost $78.33! Now I have a backup lid :)

I'm surprised that they sell the lid separately, but that worked out well for you! They did credit the shipping cost, too, didn't they? IMO you shouldn't have to spend a penny to get it replaced.

aja, spend $25 total with your Amazon order and very few things incur a shipping fee. It's not overnight shipping, but not the slow-boat-to-China either :) I pay sales tax on my orders always, almost never any shipping.

Actually the lid had a shipping fee of almost $20, but they picked up the tab. But, my boyfriend asked why I bothered buying another lid, since the one I have is only cosmetically damaged, and Amazon credited my credit card $78. I thought about it and he was right, did I really need a new lid, so I cancelled the order for the lid, and will probably purchase another crock :) I might try another brand besides Harsch. There is a store about an hour away that carries a Polish made one, next time I'm up in that area, I might pick up another 10 liter so I can do pickles and kraut at the same time. It's $129.
