I want to can German Chocolate Cake frosting. I would use a water bath. Has anyone ever tried this? Can it be done successfully? Thanks

Betty, if your recipe is at all similar to the one I use, likely not possible. My infrequently made german chocolate cake frosting recipe has evap milk, egg yolks, butter - any one of those ingredients would exclude it from safe canning. Is there some reason you'd like this cooked ahead of time and shelf stable? A german chocolate cake, frosted, will freeze reasonably well, you might be able to freeze the frosting separately but its not something I've tried.

I've frozen the coconut-pecan frosting (same thing as G. Choc?) I put on DH's birthday cake. It thaws fine. Never tried freezing a frosted cake.

No way I'd can that! It freezes beautifully. Deanna
