No personal experience with glass top stoves so this info is just based on previous discussions here bout this question.

1) it varies from brand to brand so contacting the manufacturer is recommended

2) it can void your warranty

3) the issues are the weight of the loaded canner, the heat trapped under it if it doesn't have a perfectly flat bottom, and the burner cycling off and on under it (some do and some don't).

4) you don't need a stainless steel canner just a inexpensive narrower but deep stockpot with a rack in the bottom - much less expensive and works well.

I've used mine for the last 3 or 4 years with no problem. Mostly just for small jelly jars so it doesn't take long to boil & the jars don't stay in long. I have canned quarts of pears too & had no problem. But then, my stove is about 18 years old & I'm looking at getting a new one so don't worry as much about the stove :)

My problem with a graniteware canner (on my Maytag glasstop) was that it took so long to boil water since the bottom isn't flat. I gave the canner away and use either my pressure canner or a 16 qt. stockpot.

I put a rack in my new stainless steel Tramontina pot and use it for BWB canning. I LOVE it and it heats up quickly.

Thanks everyone. I purchased a GE double burner hotplate and tried to use that but it never came to a boil. It cycled on and off. I am going to return it. I looked through the manual that came with my Maytag stove and nowhere does it say you must use flat bottom pans. The web site says "for best results". It also does not say anything about a weight limit. But it does say the very large burner is for home canning. Tomorrow I will call the 800 number just to be sure. My DH says maybe this is a sign we should give up canning. But I really love having home canned tomatoes, the store bought ones are just not the same.
