We planted some muscadine grapes on an arbor two years ago and they are now producing more than just a handful of grapes. We covered the vines with netting. It has been a bit dry here lately. We haven't been getting our usualy afternoon thunderstorms with as much regularity and it has been hot. It is dropping fruit or something is knocking it off. I pick up what is there on the ground and the next morning about half of what has appeared over night has been eaten. I'm voting racoons. The grapes are slightly underripe. Edible but not very sweet. I've been rinsing the unblemished ones (not split and no teeth marks) and tossing them into the freezer. What do you think of using them for jam. (We prefer jam to jelly.) I have a Roma strainer with the grape spiral. Since they've been frozen, do you think I'd need to cook them first or do you think the freezing would break them down enough to just toss them into the Roma?

You can't use the Roma to squeeze muscadines, they don't work like grapes, clogs up the spiral. You have to cook them out on stove, squeeze them in a clean large pot, cook on stove until juice has good color, squeeze juice out with old fashioned sieve strainer, then through fine strainer to remove pulp. The peelings will retain a lot of juice,so be thorough with squeezing. My dad has a bunch of vines, and we make wine every year, tried the Roma last year, waste of time. The juice can be frozen for at least a year.Good luck.

I have the special shorter grape spiral that they make for the Roma and used it on some wild grapes a couple of years ago. It worked fine.
