Green Tomatoes

I'm from Arizona & didn't grow up with green tomatoes. Please don't laugh at me lol but what are green tomatoes? Are they unripe tomatoes or a kind of tomato that is actually green? I've done some research but nothing I read is definitive...

There actually are both - unripe tomatoes that are green and used that way, and some varieties of tomatoes that are green when ripe.

Mostly what we discuss here are how to use the unripe green tomatoes. We all usually end up with some at season's end when time to ripen runs out and there are lots of recipes for them.

Great! My dog got curious in my tomato plant & knocked some off their stems, I was hoping I didn't have to throw them out! Thanks!

They are almost always (in this forum's context as digdirt said) unripe, still firm/hard, tart green tomatoes picked at the end of the growing season just before the first frost hits the plants, as the fruits are unusable for canning after that.

I have a Lab with a big wagging tail that can knockoff/knockdown tomatoes in a heartbeat, so I get a LOT of green ones. Depending on the amount of color at the blossom end, they might ripen on a shelf indoors. If not, I just fry them or use them in green salsa or other recipes.

DH refuses to grow "green when ripe" varieties like Aunt Ruby's or Green Zebra because, as he says, "How the heck would I know when to pick them?" LOL but I really want to try a few types - I'm such a sucker for different colored tomatoes :-)

The green when ripe varieties usually aren't totally green when ripe, Green Zebra has yellow stripes and that plus the firmness tells you when to pick them.
