How long will beets keep at 52-54 F?

I have a storage area that is around this temperature. It is dark and humid. How long would beets (minus tops) store? Any suggestions on the best way to store them?

My grandmother used to store them in a wooden box filled with damp sand - she'd cut off all but about 2 inches of the leaves, brush off the dirt and bury them in the box.

At that temperature (it's a little high), you'd probably get 2 to 3 months of storage. You'll just have to check them pretty frequently to make sure they aren't getting moldy or rotting.
