Sunset recipe for Ginger and Chile Pickled Green Beans

Has anyone tried a recipe similar to Sunset's Ginger and Chile Pickled Green Beans? (sept issue) I love spicy dilly beans, but this looks like a nice variation. Thoughts?
4 3/4 C vinegar and 3 1/2 C water
1/2 C kosher salt
2 T sugar
6 slices ginger
6 garlic cloves
6 chilies
3 # green beans

Here is a link that might be useful: Ginger and Chile Pickled Green Beans

It is a little bit better than and 1:1 vinegar to water ratio (the minimum approved) so it is probably ok even with the peppers and ginger. Sounds like an awfully lot of salt tho. The approved recipe calls for 1/2 cup too buy uses alot more green beans.
