Measuring peaches question

The spiced peach recipe I have calls for 4 pounds of peaches. I don't have a kitchen scale... these peaches are a little on the small side. I bought them by the peck bag, not weight. So does anyone have an idea of about how many peaches to a pound?

Edie, it sounds like you're a little new to canning, so congratulations on your new venture.

My guess is that you can probably determine the weight ... or somewhere close to it ... by checking online. I did a very quick "how many peaches to a pound" search ... and the first three answers I saw mentioned, "about 3-4 medium peaches to a pound."

If you're going to do much canning, it might be good if you invest in an inexpensive scale. The link below might give you an idea.

If you're still stuck, take some to the grocery store tomorrow and ask them if you can weigh what you have! Always an idea.

According to Ball's Produce Purchase Guide,

1 lb. of peaches = 3 medium

Peeled, pitted, sliced - 1 lb. yields 2 1/4 cups of prepared peaches
Peeled, pitted, crushed - 1 lb. yields 1 3/4 cups of prepared peaches

a bushel of peaches weighs approximately 48 lbs, and a peck is 1/4 of a bushel. So if you bought a full peck then you bought approximately 12 lbs. Alot of recipes will say so many pounds, but then later in the recipe it will say you should have so many CUPS. Peel til you get the CUPS.

This is from actual experience in selling produce for 15 years.

Thanks so much... I think the reason the recipe didn't include how many cups of peaches is because you can whole peaches not slices. Although not really new to canning, per se, this is the first time I've ever done whole fruit instead of jam or sliced fruit in juice/syrup, so I wasn't sure how many of the peaches I am going to need (so I know how many I can eat out of the bag while prepping ;^) !) So I will figure about 3-1/2 peaches per pound (14 total) since these are just a tad smaller than what I would consider "medium".

Since one can can peaches without sugar, or basically just packed and processed and do it safely, as long as you are adding something like spices or sugar, you could probably just do it to taste if you process for the approved canned peach instructions. It would be quite different if you are adding low acid ingredients, however. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I can all my fruit without sugar, I use a lot of it for jams and jellies, that way I don't have to remember how much sugar I add to the fruit. I just add the lemon juice or Fruit Fresh.
