Help - Fruit Fly larvae in pickle brine!

Hi all,

This is my first attempt at brined pickles. I have about 3 gallons of cukes in a crock with a weight and a cover. I've been skimming every day and we are on about day 10. I opened it up tonight to skim and there were fruit fly larvae on the sides of the crock. YUCK!

My first instinct was to toss them, but I hesitated and a quick search on google told me just to clean them out and carry on.

I don't know what to do. Has this happened to anyone else? I thought I was really careful but I guess one of the little buggers got in there. :(

If they're ruined they're ruined, but if they're not I don't want to toss them just because I'm a little squeamish. This is my first time doing this so I don't know what's normal or what's acceptable.

I did clean them out and I'm not tossing them tonight. It's too late to deal with that mess anyways. So maybe someone will have some insight for me.

Man they are smelling great and I was so excited. :(
