| Hi all, This is my first attempt at brined pickles. I have about 3 gallons of cukes in a crock with a weight and a cover. I've been skimming every day and we are on about day 10. I opened it up tonight to skim and there were fruit fly larvae on the sides of the crock. YUCK! My first instinct was to toss them, but I hesitated and a quick search on google told me just to clean them out and carry on. I don't know what to do. Has this happened to anyone else? I thought I was really careful but I guess one of the little buggers got in there. :( If they're ruined they're ruined, but if they're not I don't want to toss them just because I'm a little squeamish. This is my first time doing this so I don't know what's normal or what's acceptable. I did clean them out and I'm not tossing them tonight. It's too late to deal with that mess anyways. So maybe someone will have some insight for me. Man they are smelling great and I was so excited. :( |

| It can happen. The odor is very attractive to them. Just clean and continue. How much actual skimming are you having to do? With most properly covered crocks every 3-4 days is more than enough. Tell me about your crock. Is it a regular fermenting crock or not. Be sure to keep the water seal in your crock (if it has the water seal channel) filled so they can't get in. Dave |
