Tattler lids - worth it?

Has anyone used these? A hardware store in town is closing, they don't have much left for canning supplies (after a month - DH just noticed the sign) but they do have lots of RM and WM Tattler lids and rubber rings, they could be reducing the price more on Monday so I might just wait, right now they're $6/doz for the lids and I forget the rubber seal price. That's compared to $1.78/doz (RM) lids at W@lmart. They look like they could be a pain to use. Amazon reviews are very mixed - either people love them or hate them (high failure rate, some burns!).

Several past discussions here the search will pull up if they are still around. But worth it? Sure, work great. Especially if you can get them for a decent price. But that doesn't sound like any special buy to me. That is what I paid ordering from the manufacturer. Dave

They were originally $10.99/doz - but then the hardware stores seem to be higher than W@lmart. I've just never seen these locally before. I'll see if they go 75% off on Monday.

I have tons of them and love them. I did get a fantastic price.I figure 2 or 3 years and I have made my money back.

I have not tried the box I bought this year at Ace Hardware. I've read so many poor reviews that I have not wanted to risk my food, labor, and energy. If I ever run have a batch in the canner that needs another jar to round it off, I'll just try canning some water or tea with a Tattler.

I was wondering the same thing, the hardware store by me has them on clearance, tons of them. $1.49 a box. Do you use them the same way you would use regular lids?

If you've found Tattler lids for $1.49 a box, buy them! Tattler lids are used in exactly the same way although you should carefully read the instructions on the box. With Tattler lids you screw the rings down hard when you remove them from the canner. You would never do that with regular lids. I have friends who are on their third year with Tattlers. They love them. The only downside is that the Tattler lids and especially the rubber rings, must be heated before use. The rubber has to soften. Personally, I like using regular lids. I don't have to fool with heating up the lids and I give a lot of my canning away as Christmas gifts so I would be wasting a lot of money using expensive lids.

I've just pressure canned a pint jar of water (tinted with food coloring so I could spot leakage) using the Tattler system. I've set it aside where I will see it often, so I will know if it becomes unsealed in storage. That is one of the things I'd read about Tattler. You can be sure I'll let you know if there is a problem.
