I debating on buying another screen for my Roma food mill. I have the tomato sauce screen, but in general, I like chunkier sauces. Can you use the salsa screen for applesauce? Otherwise, what use would it be? Seems like it would be the worst of both worlds, letting in skin and seed bits and still being mushy.

Yes you can use it for applesauce or for any other coarse textured sauce. But yes it does allow small seeds, bits of peel, etc. into the mixture. Some prefer it that way. If you don't want those in but just want chunky apple (or tomato) sauce then you'd need to peel and de-seed before milling. There is another discussion further down the page about using it to make salsas and relishes. Dave

I wonder if it could be used with strawberries, peaches, apricots, plums to make a chunkier "sauce" for jams? I haven't tried it though... Deanna

Eh, just peel and dice and mash in the pot if you want smoother texture. I think I'll pass. I may eventually get the one that de-seeds raspberries, but not this year, my window has passed. I have my apple peeler for the sauce I guess.
