Back to school supplies are on sale cheap now or they will be soon. Flexible plastic rulers are very cheap now. Just get a clear one and use it, or cut notches in it at the appropriate levels. Get several and use one for every common level. They're like 15 cents each now at Wally World. Beats paying premium prices for a specially designed tool sold by Ball.

that's a great idea for head space in jars. but for the 2 inch water over the jars in a BWB, i suggest a harder plastic or a wooden ruler. my flexible plastic rule curled a bit from just a few seconds in simmering water !!
