Is Leakage of pressure canner normal?

I have an old pressure canner that had a new ring put in before going into storage several years ago (more than 5), and as I placed the weight on the vent pipe, I notices that the space between the lid and body was spitting liquid - is this normal? I turned the stove off and am heading to the store for another ring, but thought I'd ask real quick if this is something that can sabotage my canning or should I consider it normal? Thanks, all!

Need to know the brand of canner - it is somewhat common with some brands to briefly leak at the beginning until the gasket completely expands. Normally by the time the canner has fully vented for the required 10 min and you are ready to put the weight on the leaking should have stopped.

That is why canners that are new or haven't been used for some time should first have a trial run using only water, not food.

If the steam continues to leak around the gasket then something is wrong. Either the gasket is in upside down, needs to be replaced, has dried and shrunk and needs to be rehydrated or, it needs to be oiled.
