Apple Cranberry Chutney

I know some of you have made this and I'm just curious, the recipe calls for 2 cups of chopped cranberries. Later it says to boil gently (of course after adding all the rest of the stuff, etc.) until cranberries pop. My question is, if they are chopped, how are they going to pop? Don't they do that if they're whole? Making it tomorrow so would like any input.

Ignore chopping them. That is pretty difficult anyway. I've made this chutney and just measured the cranberries and let the mixture cook until they pop. It is quite tasty and was a good way to use the cranberries that were buried in my freezer for a year. They went in still frozen and it all turned out fine.
