Question: Can I unseal and reseal?

Hi, Kay here. I am new to this list and fairly new to canning. I canned split pea soup yesterday and I forgot to add the ham. My husband said to just add the ham when I open to cook. I know I won't always have the ham to add. I am wondering if I can open them to add the ham and reprocess them? I also know I will have to use new lids. Thank You!

First - welcome to our forum!! :)

I wouldn't recommend doing it because the double processing will just mush your split peas even more. Plus adding the ham will increase the processing time needed. Plus you would have to dump the jars, reheat it all, re-jar, new lids etc. etc. Too much wasted time and work. ;)

Instead I would suggest dicing the ham while you have it and freezing it in serving size packets. Then you will have it to add to the soup come serving time.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Thanks Dave. I think this sounds like a good idea.
