Need information on lids for freezer jars.

| Hello, I am new to this site and hoping someone could give me some information. I just came across a case of these Ball glass freezer jam jars that look like a "drinking glass". They have no threads and have the white snap on plastic lids. The item #80800 is listed on the box. I can't find any information on them and would like to know if there are any replacement lids available for them.
Thank you!

| Maybe someone else has a better idea, but I can't think of any Ball freezer jars with no threads and white snap-on lids. Is there an illustration on the box that matches the contents? There are older Ball jelly jars with no threads that came with metal caps and were designed for jelly sealed with paraffin. And there are freezer jars of various sorts, but they are either plastic or threaded dual-purpose for canning or freezing. Did you get these at a garage sale or something? Is it possible the box was used for storage but the jars aren't actually Ball? Do they have the Ball logo anywhere on them? I know of other brands (specifically French tempered glass jelly jars with plastic lids) but not Ball. Carol |

| I do know what you are talking about because I have some of them...I just don't know about replacement lids. If I were you, I'd go to the ball jar site and send them an e-mail. |

| I'm glad to know that. I hadn't seen those. Carol |

| I have some too but no idea how old they are. I got them at an auction with several boxes of very old jars with bails. One box of plastic lids. I use the for short cut flowers at the market. |

I have a couple too. From a 'mixed' box of jars at a garage sale. I love them for the little bit of jam you always seem to have left that won't fill another jar. I just pop it in one of those with the plastic lid and refrigerate! I use a metal-lidded one for kosher salt next to the stove. Leftover bits of 'whatever' in the fridge, etc. Deanna |

| I picked them up last week for $3.00. They were brand new in the box (the box had some damage and looked like it had gotten wet at some point). It had the new unopened box inside that contained 12 white plastic snap on lids and a box of pectin. They are great little jars, and they all say ball on them. The box says Ball Freezer Jam Jars with plastic snap on lids model #80800. I can't find info on them anywhere. The lids all have that musty smell to them that I can't get out. That's why I was looking for replacement lids. Thanks for all the responses!! |

| Just in case these are what you are talking about (they come in several different sizes) then replacement lids are available from freshpreserving.com (Ball). They are also sold at Walmart here and several other places where canning supplies are sold. Dave |

| Dave, the freezer jars I have are glass, not plastic. But I wonder if those lids would work? I will check them out, thanks! |

| I am guessing those plastic lids won't work. The freezer containers do have a thread and the lids are rigid. I'm assuming your lids are somewhat flexible and don't have a thread. How have you cleaned those plastic lids? It would help if you could let them soak in solution out in the sunshine, but since that's impossible this time of year here's what you can do. (If you haven't already tried this.) Wash lids thoroughly and rinse. Put in a container. Dump in a good amount of baking soda. Add hot water and let the lids sit in that solution a day or so. Drain, rinse, put back in the container with a 1/2 and 1/2 solution of bleach and water. Again, let sit at least a day. Drain, rinse and then either wash with dishwashing liquid and rinse or run through the dishwasher, top rack. If this doesn't take care of the problem the lids are hopeless. Carol |

| Carol, Thanks for the info. So far I have soaked them in very hot water with vinegar and baking soda. Then soaked in bleach and water. The last thing I tried was oxy clean and hot water and then washed one last time and dried them. They are not as bad but still have that musty odor to them. If I can't find replacement lids, the only other way I could use them (for food purposes) would be to place a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the jar before putting the lid on. Or I can just use them for drinking glasses and small vases!! LOL |

| I think I found something that worked to get rid of the musty smell. I put 4 denture cleaning tablets in hot water and soaked the plastic lids overnight. I think it worked! I am going to let them dry completely and check them again. |

Many denture tablets contain Borax and Borax is a great cleaner, de odorizer. If you still get a faint odor, dissolve 1/4 cup of Borax in 1 quart warm water and let them soak overnight. I use alot of Borax for cleaning. It once got sour milk smell out of my car carpet, a quart of milk slid under the car seat in the back and eventually exploded. (Thanks kids) |
