Bad lids?

Today I canned 3 quart jars of turkey, and 3 quart jars of water. I opened a brand new box of Ball lids. Canned everything as usual, including wiping the rims of the jars holding turkey/broth. Admittedly, I did not wipe the jars containing water. Because, well, it's WATER. Well 2 of the 3 turkeys and 1 of the waters did NOT seal. One of the remaining waters is questionable. I'll have to pull on it tomorrow to see for sure if it's sealed. So, 3 out of 6 definitely did not seal. That is a 50% failure rate, and possibly more. What the heck? Have you ever heard of a bad batch of lids; does that happen?

How did you heat your lids prior to putting them on ? They should not be boiled, but held in 180 degree water. If they get too hot the sealing compound can get too soft. When you put the lids on and screw the bands down, you can cut through the compound and they won't seal.

My opinion would be that it wasn't your lids, but the way that the lids were processed. I look at every lid, and check the compound. Just because the box was new, that doesn't mean that the box had been taken care correctly before you got it.

I'd check the rest of the lids, and recan if within the 24 hrs. Otherwise, freeze with correct freezer containers.

I've never had a 50% failure rate in the decades of canning. No matter what brand of lids.

Agree with the above that it is more likely the how-preppped /used rather than the lids themselves. I've had a failed lid now and then but never with Ball or Kerr that I can recall and never that high a fail rate.

Have even reused lids for canning water (only reuse I do) with no seal problems.

Another possibility though is the jar. Rims might have a small unseen nick or something that would prevent the lid seal.

I have had failures with Ball and Kerr, but not many.

Forgot about jar problems. I automatically check every jar every time, sometimes 2-3 times (one when I wash, one when I choose the jar, and the last time after I fill the jar).
