My search for wide-mouth pint jars

| I went to 4 stores in search of more wide-mouth half-pints like the ones I have used for many years. (The "herd" has shrunk over time due to give-aways that do not always find their way back home!) I wanted to make some pepper jelly for my S-I-L and I prefer those old wide-mouth jars as the jelly/jam (IF you are lucky!) will slide right out intact like from a jello mold so you can plop it neatly onto the cream cheese for serving. Anyway, all I could find were some fancy-schmancy new-fangled squat wide-mouth pints & half-pints that have a narrow ridge or shoulder. Worse yet, they come only as 4-packs with a fancy-schmancy price tag to boot! Does anyone know if Ball has discontinued the standard wide-mouth half pints that used to come by the dozen like other jars? Or is it just that it is past peak canning season and there were none left? |

| Walmart here had them last week. Saw them when buying lids. ACE Hardware had them mid-summer but I haven't been in there lately to check. And if you have any Dollar stores like Fred's, Dollar General, etc. they usually have them as well - at least here. I'm sure it all depends on the local demand. Dave |

| I saw them here in Kroger and HEB recently. Was looking for wide mouth quarts. Walmart here carries some all year, but probably has more during the summer months. I suspect many stores order once in the spring or early summer and then sell out to make room for holiday seasonal items. |

| Thanks, all. I will check out the dollar store-types. Had not considered those. Kroger was a "don't have." Don't have an ACE in my town, but I did check a couple of farm supply stores to no avail. I prefer to skip Wal-Mart unless I really have no choice. ;-) I notice all 3 replies are from folks out West. Wonder if that is significant... Central Ohio is a pretty big canning area, though I did not go far enough east of me to check Amish country. Plan to drive over that way after the first of the year for a couple of other things so will check for those, too, since I am now assured they are still Out There. |

| If you have a Lowe's, that's another possibility. At ours, the canning supplies tend to be moved to odd corners at the end of the season (Houseplants, for instance). I don't buy jars there at regular price because other places are cheaper. I don't remember the usual date Lowe's usually runs out of jars; maybe you'll be lucky. Or call them first. Our JoAnn Fabric currently has blue and green Ball jars; I'm not sure if they have any half-pints, but ours is a small store and there might be more choice at a larger store. (They also have individual non-Ball jars in odd colors, lidless; I think they were all larger sizes, and don't know if they can be used for canning.) |

| Weedlady, You mentioned Amish country, so for a very good source of jars, the Amish country stores usually have a good selection. I would not always expect a bargain but they are usually well stocked. James |

| They are still available in Oregon too. My local drugstore chain (BiMart, for those in the northwest) carries them. I think they were around $8/dozen. Deanna |

| Yes, Ball still makes wide mouths. But I think it really depends on where you live and what time of year it is how easy or not they are to find. Where I live I can get jars year round in a good selection of styles and sizes, but when I go visit family there isn't much of anything for canning jars, even during canning season. Kerr still makes wide mouths too- but I can't find Kerr anywhere around here, everyone sells ball jars or occasionally golden harvest jars. |

| Here in San Diego county, there is a large store called "The Container Store". I'm not sure if they are natioinally syndicated. They definitely have a lot of jars to choose from, although their prices are double to triple that of Walmart. |

| I see widemouth cases for sale anywhere they sell jars. Kroger, K-mart, Meijer (if you have one near you), dollar stores, hardware stores, etc. Rodney |
