Would Erica Cinerea survive a Z5 winter in a pot?

I've got a few heaths/heathers in my garden that I planted last September. Now I've found a beautiful Erica Cinerea "purple bell heather" at Lowe's that I couldn't resist. I was thinking it would look great in a pot, but am concerned that perhaps it might not survive the tough winters we've been having here in NY if potted. Has anyone had experience with growing heather/heath in containers outdoors year-round on the East Coast? I don't know if it would get enough light if I had to put it in our basement window for the winter. If it's too risky a proposition, I'll just find room for it in the garden. Thanks!

Maybe this exposes my ignorance as I am completely new to these plants with the current season. However, aren't they supposed to have a dormant season, like roses? I do not see why you would want it to have light during the winter. An unheated basement or garage would be better?

These plants are evergreen and so I assume would need to have at least some light even during their non-growing and non-flowering seasons. E. cinerea is hardy to zone 4 if given protection with a covering of pine boughs or something like that. I think it could be overwintered in a container outdoors if the container is insulated from deep-freezing cold to protect the roots as well. cranebill
