Pruning heather

Hello everyone,

I have a Calluna vulgaris in my garden that I planted last year.

Upon first glance it almost looks dead with the brown dry foliage on the top of the plant.

If I pull back the foliage and look closer to the stem I can see what looks like green healthy growth. Will pruning the brown dead stuff off back to the fresh growth damage the plant or take away any necessary protection?

Thanks!

You can wait a while to see if any of the browned areas sport new growth. But at some point soon, you will cut it away. It might look a little misshapen this summer, but in successive years it will fill that spot in and look fine. Remember to cover it before next winter (evergreen boughs)—lots of info on that in this forum.

RE: Pruning heather

I started planting heathers and heaths awhile back and then learned they need a shearing after flowering to make them bushier and nicer looking. I did it and they look so much healthier.
