Heath/Heather in North Carolina?

Posted by kribensis Clayton, NC (My Page) on Fri, Jul 16, 04 at 8:51
I live right on the edge of zone 7 and zone 8 in North Carolina (hot humid summers, winters occasionally down to 15-20 degrees (typically 40-50 degrees)+ occasional ice storms, little snow). Are there any heaths/heathers that would thrive in this environment? I haven't had much luck finding this information in a web search.
Thanks!

| imho your best chance is trying erica carnea and e. x darleyensis(aka e. mediterranea hybrida)---they have some tolerance of hot summers. you will need to provide extremely well drained acid soil (sand/peat/bark) with an organic mulch (compost or bark chips) probablly best planted on a mound/raised bed or slope in a north or east exposure. they are not drought tolerant in hot dry summer areas so need some summer water as long as drainage is excellent. here in the coatal pacific north west they are even planted in old sand dunes and do well but our climatic conditions are much different than yours. good luck |
