I'm confused

I bought a bud bloomer, Flamingo last spring. It was an incredible orange/red colour. After a few weeks, the colour disappeared and it was a happy green colour all summer. A couple of weeks ago, it began to bloom a pretty mauve. I don't understand the colours. And, when does it get a haircut? I am in the Pacific NW and we get quite a rainy winter but mild.
