Please help me to get this heather to survive????

So I broke down and bought another heather after many failures but this is the last one...... It was unmarked...... just said calluna vulgaris (no cultivar)..... in a large couple gallon pot...... I got one that still had alot of green on it...... some looked a little iffy..... It still has a couple of blooms...... the bottom looks a little dead and leggy but that's normal isn't it?????? (It was on sale....... :) )...... Is it too late to plant it???? I"m going to have to anyway..... I think it will do well???? ..... So where should I plant it????? Is there anything I can do to insure its survival???? My soil (I think) is reasonably acidic plants like azalea THRIVE with no additional acidic fertilizer..... I'm zone 6/7 (zone 7 'technically') on the cusp of zone 6..... and I was planning on putting it near a path ..... should I plant it on a little hill so the soil drains better?????? My soil drains pretty much fine but I was just wondering???? This site is not dry but not real moist..... will it do well there????? It is full sun..... Should I mulch heavily????? Should I add extra acidic things to the soil (like coffee grounds) Help..... pleeeeasssssse!!!! :)

I asked my nursery about planting Heather in my garden and they didn't recommend it. I live in zone 6a (Kansas). Heather simply doesn't do well in this zone.
It's a pity because it is so beautiful when planted en masse.
Your best bet is to find some perrenial that mimics the look of Heather, but that also won't die on you.

Well I know people grow heather in the mid atlantic and new england...... I'm not sure how it would do in Kansas since you don't (don't?) have acidic soil..... They sell heather all over the place and I'm sure it would do well IF I found the right spot for it...... I just have to find the right spot...... It has naturalized in the northeast including new jersey...... (though I've never seen any) according to the USDA..... I sometimes google plants and where they can be found to see where they grow...... so I"m sure if I found the right place for it it would survive...... but where??????

I live in Zone 4/5....western NC in the mountains. Planted 2 heaths several years ago, lost one the 1st winter but the other survived and is today a gorgeous 12X30 plant and blooms all winter. Have not given it any special care....added sand and gravel when I planted it...my soil is mostly clay. Have ordered 6 for Spring planting from RockSpray.
