Heather and Paperbak Maple

Is there a heather or heath that is flowering now? I'm considering using Heather as a companion plant for a Paperbark Maple. The paperbark is in peak fall form now and I figured it might enhance the effect if I were to use a mass planting of Heathers beneath it. Any suggestions with winter interest would be a huge plus.

Erica carnea and E. x darleyensis (winter blooming heaths) are blooming now and will continue to bloom throughout the winter (depending on cultivar). You will have your choice of flower colors, ranging from white to pale pink to the deeper purples. I also like including Callunas (heathers) for winter interest plantings - while they bloom in the summer and early fall, many have interesting fall, winter or spring foliage in oranges, golds or brick reds.

Here is a link that might be useful: Calluna 'Wickwar Flame' - winter color

Gardengal, Thanks for your suggestions. How should I prepare the bed for heather? Other posts here suggest sandy acidic soil...

The same soil conditions the paperbark prefers - slightly acidic, well-draining and rich - will do perfectly for the heaths and heathers.
